Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed, who has joined Quetta Gladiators as Team Director for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025, is hopeful of his comeback in the national team. After taking up the new role in the PSL team, there are speculations that Sarfaraz has retired from the sport but the veteran has denied the rumours. In an interview with Cricket Pakistan, he remarked, “I haven’t announced my retirement yet.” The 37-year-old last played for Pakistan against Australia in a Test match in Perth in December 2023.

“When someone has played cricket all their life, it obviously hurts to stay away from the game. There comes a time when every player has to step away from cricket, but I try to make the most of whatever matches I get,” said Sarfaraz. He also added, “I still keep some hope alive that maybe I’ll get another chance. I never said that I have to play for Pakistan — of course, it's every player’s dream to represent their country. I just want to perform well in whatever cricket I play and give my 100 percent.”

Sarfaraz was dropped from Team Pakistan following 2023-24 Australia tour

Sarfaraz was dropped from the national team after failing to be effective in the three-match Test series in Australia played in December 2023- January 2024. In the opening Test played in Perth, he was part of the side but racked up scores of three and four in the contest. Pakistan lost the game by a colossal margin of 360 runs.

Noting Sarfaraz’s failure, skipper Shan Masood didn’t include him in the side’s playing XI for the next two games held in Melbourne and Sydney. However, the Champion Trophy 2017-winning captain hasn’t lost faith and hunger to serve his national side again.
