On Wednesday, May 21, the five-time champions, Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) by 59 runs to register a comeback victory in match number 63 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After a brisk innings of 43-ball 73* from Suryakumar Yadav, Mitchell Santner and Jasprit Bumrah’s disciplined bowling reduced DC to 121/10, helping them register a comfortable win, along with sealing the last playoffs spot.

For the unversed, the stand-in captain of DC, Faf du Plessis, won the toss and decided to bowl first. His decision proved crucial as DC dismissed Rohit Sharma and Will Jacks in the powerplay overs. Mustafizur Rahman dismissed the former MI opener for five runs, a combined effort from Mukesh Kumar and Vipraj Nigam sent Will Jacks back to the pavilion for 21 off 13.

Ryan Rickelton, however, started strongly for the MI, but was dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav, who brought his 100th IPL wicket. With Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma in the middle, an above par score on the flat Mumbai wicket was still possible, by the latter went, scoring 27 off 27. Skipper Hardik Pandya also departed cheaply. Thereafter, Suryakumar Yadav and Naman Dhir thrashed the DC bowlers for cleaners in the 19th and penultimate over, to help post 180 runs on the board.

MI knock DC out of IPL 2025 playoffs race; beat by 59 runs

In the run-chase, the visitors never seemed in the game as stand-in skipper Faf du Plessis departed having scored six off seven balls. The star wicketkeeper-batter, KL Rahul, who walked out as impact substitute, soon followed Du Plessis. Abishek Porel and Sameer Rizvi has their few share, before the wicketkeeper was dismissed off six runs.

With the middle-order struggling to extend their stay in the middle, DC were reduced to 104/7. After a few deliveries stay, Madhav Tiwari and Kuldeep Yadav also were dismissed and the game looked completely out of the visitor’s hand. Mitchell Santner and Jasprit Bumrah starred with the ball, picking three wickets each, along with Trent Boult, Deepak Chara, Will Jacks and Karn Sharma also finishing among the wickets.

With the win, MI confirmed their berth for the IPL 2025 playoffs, advancing to their 11th playoff appearance in the tournament’s 18-year-long history. With a match still to go for them, MI joins Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings in the top four, DC will end their campaign on May 24 with their final league match scheduled against Punjab Kings.
