Morocco, Spain and Portugal are likely to host the 2030 edition of the FIFA World Cup. Not only this but the first three opening matches are to be played in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay. The decision to host the tournament in different countries has been taken as a move to acknowledge the 100th anniversary of the tournament. Not only this but South America has been chosen to host the first three games in a nod to the South American roots of the football event.
As per the reports by The Athletic, the proposal was discussed at a FIFA Council meeting on October 4, Wednesday. The reports further state that a secret discussion was going on between UEFA and the South American and African federations, who reached an agreement before the proposal was moved to the global football regulating body.
All six countries will qualify directly for the tournament, and it will be the first season to be hosted across three continents. It is to be noted that Uruguay hosted as well as won the inaugural season of the FIFA World Cup in 1930, as they defeated Argentina in the final.
The 2030 season of the renowned competition will see Morocco as the hosts for the first time after they have had unsuccessful bids for the same for five seasons. Those seasons are 1994, 1998, 2006, 2010 and 2026. Not only this, but Portugal will also host the event for the first time after having unsuccessful bids in the 2018 and 2022 World Cup.
