Bangladesh's assistant coach Nic Pothas has resigned from his position ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, citing family reasons. The former South African cricketer joined the coaching position for Bangladesh in 2023, and his contract was until 2026. But with just over a month remaining to the first match of the Champions Trophy against India in Dubai, his decision to leave Bangladesh cricket team is far from ideal for the BCB.

Nic Pothas took to his Instagram account and wrote, "Well, like all good things, this too must come to an end. I've had an amazing time with some great people. We've broken many records along the way and made history and amazing memories. Now to spend some quality time at home and see what the next chapter holds." Pothas further extended his best wishes to the Bangladesh cricket team, and said, "An incredible year awaits Bangladesh cricket. My best wishes to the team. I will miss you all."

Confirming his resignation, BCB cricket operations in-charge Shahriar Nafees said, "Yes, his contract ran until 2026, but he resigned due to family reasons."

Uncertainty in Bangladesh team over Nic Pothas' replacement

With Pothas' departure, it is unclear who will succeed him or whether anyone will be selected at all. Currently, Phil Simmons is the team's head coach with Bangladeshi coach Mohammad Salahuddin overseeing the batting unit as a senior assistant. Andre Adams serves as the bowling coach.

Before joining the Bangladesh cricket team as an assistant coach, Pothas was the head coach of Sri Lanka in 2017-18 and the West Indies in 2018-19. Aside from head coaching, Pothas has served as an assistant and field coach for a variety of teams, including franchise sides in various leagues all over the world.
