Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Sunday, January 12 announced their 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025. While the side will be led by Najmul Hossain Shanto after he continued his reign at the helm despite leaving T20I captaincy, Shakib Al Hasan was a noticable miss.
However, the team boasts of experienced players, including Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah and Mutafizur Rahman, two of the key names, Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das were notable absentees. Apart from them, Tamim Iqbal, who was likely to make his return, opted out after he announced his retirement from international cricket on Friday.
Shakib Al Hasan dropped from Bangladesh’s Champions Trophy squad
The veteran Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan’s absence was an obivious one after he failed the bowling reassessment test for the second time last month. The 37-year-old continues to remain barred from bowling in domestic as well as international matches after his action was deemed illegal. Unlike Shakib’s absence, Litton Das’ exclusion comes as a shock after his woeful form in 2024, where he scored six runs across five ODIs, average at 1.20. Despite his experience, the selectors have opted to go with young talents, including Soumya Sarkar, Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Towhid Hridoy.
Bangladesh have been placed in Group A, alongside India, Pakistan and New Zealand. The Najmul Hossain Shanto-led side will open their campaign on February 20 against India at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai, followed by a match each against New Zealand (February 24) and Pakistan (February 27).
