Veteran Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan continues to be on the sidelines after he failed bowling reassessment test in Chennai. The Bangladesh all-rounder, who was suspended for his illegal bowling action last year, have to continue working on it as he failed the reassessment test conducted last month at the Sri Ramachandra Centre for Sports Science in Chennai.

After being initially suspended from bowling across all competitions under the jurisdiction of the English and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Shakib Al Hasan was thereafter suspended from bowling across all domestic as well as international competitions, following an assessment conducted by the Loughborough University.

Shakib Al Hasan fails bowling reassessment test; doubtful for Champions Trophy 2025

But on January 11, it was informed that the veteran cricketer failed the reassessment for the second time and will continue to play as a batter. "Consequently, the player's existing suspension from bowling in international cricket following the initial independent assessment at the testing centre of Loughborough University in the UK, also remains in place," BCB said in a statement.

"A successful reassessment is required for the bowling suspension to be lifted. While Shakib is currently unable to bowl, he is eligible to continue playing as a batsman in all forms of domestic and international cricket," the statement from BCB further read. However, this comes as a major blow for the Bangladesh side seeing the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 ahead, making his participation under cloud.

Earlier, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and BCB Chief Faruque Ahmed had decided in favour of having all-rounder in the squad if he was able to clear the test, but his participation now hangs in thread. Moreover, it has to be seen that Shakib has remain absent from international cricket since the side’s 0-2 defeat against India in Test series. His last competitive appearance came in November 2024 in the T10 League for Bangla Tigers.
