Spanish forward Nico Williams, the 22-year-old, who played a vital role for Spain to win the UEFA Euro 2024 and reach the Nations League final in 2025, has signed an eight-year contract extension with his boyhood team Athletic Club Bilbao. With that, Nico Williams will continue playing at the San Mames until 2035 since his current contract with them would have expired in two years time.
He has put an end to all the speculations that were suggesting that he will be making a move to FC Barcelona in the upcoming weeks. Nico had been a top priority for Barcelona since the past few weeks. However, his contract extension will mean that Barcelona have to search for another player to boost up their attack for the upcoming campaign. In the new deal signed by Nico Williams, Athletic Club have increased his release clause by 50%, which means that if any club were to make offers for the Spanish wonderboy in the future they will have to agree on the release clause set by the club.
I am where I want to be, with my people, this is my home. Aupa Athletic!: Nico Williams
Nico Williams has been the rising star for Athletic Club Bilbao ever since he joined them. He became part of their youth academy in the year 2013 and was promoted to the first team at the age of 18. Nico has made over 167 appearances for the club and has managed to score over 31 goals in the five seasons at the club. He was a key factor in their Copa del-Rey victory in 2024 which ended the club's wait of over 40 years for a major trophy. He was the player of the match for Spain in their victory against England in the UEFA Euro 2024 finals.
FC Barcelona were confident of landing the deal this summer after all their efforts in the last summer had gone in vain. As per sources, Barcelona will be targeting the likes of Marcus Rashford from Manchester United or Luis Diaz from Liverpool after they have missed out on their priority target this summer.
