Australia continued their dominance in the Ashes series as they went on to win the Ashes series seventh consecutive time in 2001. The visitors went on to clinch the series in England by 4-1 after they last lost an Ashes in 1986-87. After winning the first two Tests at Edgbaston and Lords respectively, Australia needed just one to take an unassailable lead of 3-0 in a five–match series.
Talking about the match, batting first, England were bowled out for 185 runs in the first innings with Marcus Trescothick top scoring with 69(93) runs. For Australia, Glenn McGrath shone with figures of 5/49, while Shane Warne and Jason Gillespie took two wickets each while Brett Lee put one in his bag. In reply, Australia also didn’t have a good outing with the bat as they were bowled out for 190 runs taking a lead of just five runs in the first innings.
Shane Warne’s 6-wicket haul guided Australia to seven-wicket win
After restricting Australia to take a big lead, the hosts England failed to take an advantage as they were bowled out for just 162 runs in the second innings setting a target of 158 runs. It was star leg spinner Shane Warne who destroyed England’s batting line-up with the figures of 6/33. England skipper Mike Atherton scored 51(104) runs but didn’t get much support from the other end.
After that, the Aussies chased the winning target comfortably with Matthew Hayden and Mark Waugh scoring 42 runs each. Australia won by three wickets and took a lead of 3-0 in a five–match series. After that, England won the fourth Test while Australia won the fifth Test again to retain the Ashes with a 4-1 series win.
