Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers put up a massive 229-run partnership as Royal Challengers Bengaluru took over the charge of Gujarat Lions bowlers at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on May 14, 2016. De Villiers came up with his third IPL hundred, while Kohli, who was in the form of his life that season, also went on to score his third IPL hundred. RCB posted a mammoth 248/3 on board and bowled GL out for just 104 runs to register a massive 144-run victory.

Coming to bat first, RCB didn’t get a good start as they lost Chris Gayle (6 off 13) at the score of 19 runs in 3.5 overs. After that, skipper Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers took charge of the innings and went on to register the highest-ever partnership in the IPL history. De Villiers dominated throughout most of the innings and went on to complete his hundred in just 43 balls.

As AB de Villiers was smashing the bowlers all over the ground and completed his hundred in 43 balls, Virat Kohli was anchoring the innings and completed his fifty in 38 balls. However, the RCB skipper suddenly changed his gears in the 19th overs and went to smash 30 runs off those six balls against Shivil Kaushik. Then in the final over, Kohli completed his hundred in 53 balls and registered another milestone in his record-breaking season that year.

Virat Kohli got out after scoring 109 runs off 55 balls, hitting five fours and eight sixes while AB de Villiers remained unbeaten 129*(52) runs with 10 fours and 12 sixes as RCB posted 248/3 in their 20 overs, which was the second highest team total in IPL at that time. In reply to RCB’s massive total, Gujarat Lions were bowled out for just 104 runs in 18.4 overs as RCB won the match by 144 runs, This was the highest-ever win margin in IPL before Mumbai Indians broke the record after defeating Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) by 146 runs in IPL 2017.
