Two-time Wimbledon runners-up Ons Jabeur retired from her first round match at the All England Club this year on the opening day of the tournament. Despite the constant setbacks from her reported injuries, Jabeur attempted to push through when she took to the court against Viktoriya Tomova. The 30-year-old Tunisian has been ranked as high as world No. 2 in WTA rankings, she was the first African and Arab woman to reach a major singles final. But now, it is uncertain when she will return to court.
Ons Jabeur has announced a break from tennis, citing physical and emotional exhaustion as she has withdrawn from the upcoming Canadian Open in Montreal. WTA in an announcement also added that she was “the only player in the top 99 who has not entered next month’s US Open.” Taking to social media, Ons Jabeur wrote, “For the past two years I've been pushing myself so hard, fighting through injuries and facing many other challenges. Deep down, I haven't felt happy on court for some time now.”
Following her Wimbledon exit, Jabeur also expressed that “it has been a very tough season for me”, apart from adding that she would rest and just “try to disconnect a little bit from tennis” and spend some more time with her family.
Ons Jabeur’s recent problems have resulted in her rank slipping to world No. 71
Ons Jabeur will be replaced by Suzan Lamens in the main draw of the Canadian Open in Montreal. Her absence from recent events has seen her ranking slip, to world No. 71 this week, which is her lowest WTA ranking since January 2020.
After her Wimbledon exit, it was reported that it wasn’t her injuries that forced her out, but it was the scorching heat. Reportedly, Ons Jabeur struggled to breathe during the match due to her asthma, and was forced to retire post the loss of the first set.
