The former South African Paralympian Oscar Pistorius has been released from prison on parole as per the confirmation from the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) in South Africa. The 37-year-old was in jail since 2014 for culpable homicide after killing his girlfriend Reeve Steenkamp, a law graduate and successful model, on Valentine’s Day a year prior.
The announcement from the DCS about releasing Oscar Pistorius on bail came on the morning of Friday, January 5, at around 8:30 AM (South African time). With that, they indicated that the corrections officials had allowed the “Blade Runner” to go on parole from the Atteridgeville Correctional Center in the capital of South Africa, Pretoria, during the early hours of the day.

In 2013, during the early hours of Valentine's Day, Oscar Pistorius fatally shot his girlfriend Reeve Steenkamp after firing four pistol shots through the door of a toilet cubicle at his home in Pretoria. At the case hearings, the 37-year-old had argued about mistaking his girlfriend for an intruder while thinking that she was sleeping in bed, but the Supreme Court sentenced him to 13 years and five months in prison after his case went on for years.
Moreover, Oscar Pistorius rose to fame during the London Olympics in 2012, becoming one of the select few athletes to compete at the multi-sporting event, along with the Paralympics. Known for his carbon-fiber prosthetics legs, he became a multi-time Paralympic champion in the 100m, 200m, and 400m races in the T44 category.
