On May 4, in the second match of the double-header Sunday in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Punjab Kings (PBKS) defeated the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by 37 runs to register a comeback win, at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadum in Dharamsala. After a 91-run knock from Prabhsimran Singh, along with a crucial 25-ball 45 from skipper Shreyas Iyer, PBKS bowlers restricted LSG to 199/7 and pulled off a convincing win to go to the second spot in the IPL 2025 standings.
For the unversed, the captain of LSG, Rishabh Pant, won the toss and decided to bowl first. Thus, inviting the hosts to put the score first on the board, PBKS lost their young opener Priyansh Arya early as he departed after scoring one off four deliveries. Thereafter, Josh Inglis joined Prabhsimran Singh at the crease as the duo put up 48-run stand before Inglis was removed by Akash Maharaj Singh. Skipper Shreyas Iyer played a crucial knock of 45 runs but fell against Digvesh Rathi.
Prabhsimran Singh stood long in the middle, scoring a 48-ball 91, he got much-needed support from Iyer. Nehal Wadhera also chipped in with a 9-ball 16, Shashank Singh (33* off 15) and Marcus Stoinis’ (15* off 5) quick cameos helped the side get a competitive total on the board. For the Rishabh Pant-led side, Akash Maharaj Singh and Digvesh Rathi picked up two wickets each, Prince Yadav also finished among the wicket, picking one.
PBKS jump to second place in IPL 2025 standings with convincing 37-run win
In the massive run chase of 237, LSG never looked settled in the game as wickets kept falling for them. Mitchell Marsh, who came out as an impact substitute, departed for a five-ball duck. Aiden Markram and Nicholas Pooran quickly followed Marsh back in the dugout, courtesy Arshdeep Singh. After the quick collapse of the top order, Rishabh Pant also could not provide much assistance as he was dismissed at 18 off 17 deliveries.
However, Ayush Badoni and Abdul Samad played key knocks in the massive run chase, scoring 74 and 45 runs respectively, but the side fell short by 37 runs as PBKS bowlers restricted the visitors to 199/7 in their 20 overs. Arshdeep Singh was the wrecker-in-chief, picking three key wickets, Azmatullah Omarzai finished with two whereas Marco Jansen and Yuzvendra Chahal also got one each in their bag.
Moreover, with a win over LSG in Dharamsala, PBKS have now claimed the second spot in the IPL 2025 standings, just sitting one-point shy of Royal Challengers Bengaluru. LSG, on the othe hand, continue to reel at seventh spot and will be hoping to finish matches in their favour in order to seal a playoffs berth.
