In match 18 of the One-Day Cup 2024/25 played in Australia, Tasmania beat Victoria by five wickets at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart. Chasing a target of 267, Tasmania witnessed the batting heroics of opener Caleb Jewell, who produced an unbeaten knock of 105 off 115. Earlier, Victoria skipper Will Sutherland won the toss and elected to bat first. After the stable start from the openers Harry Dixon and wicket-keeper batter Sam Harper, Victoria lost the former who walked back to the pavilion within the first powerplay after scoring 24 off 32.

In the 11th over of the contest, Marcus Harris also fell against Beau Webster after scoring only two off just 12. Riding on the steady batting efforts from Harper (50 off 57) and Thomas Rogers (68 off 70), the visitors racked up 266 runs on the board. Captain Sutherland and Sam Elliott also contributed with their knocks of 30 (34) and unbeaten 46 (43) respectively. Beau Webster became the highest wicket-taker for the hosts for claiming the scalps of Harris and Thomas Rogers.

Jewell stood tall against the visitors, received support from Charlie Wakim

Whiel chasing the target, the hosts got an exceptional start from Michael Owen and Caleb Jewell. Both openers stitched a 67-run stand in six overs. In the crunch situation, Sutherland stepped up and got the better of Owen, who was playing at a score of 48 off just 18 the moment before his dismissal. Following Owen, Beau Webster also departed after scoring only eight. Tim Ward did his job exceptionally as he played a fine innings of 22 off 23 before losing his battle to Peter Siddle.

Caleb Jewell stood at one end firmly to give the headache to the Victorians. Along with Charlie Wakim, he built a 66-run partnership that came in just 66 deliveries. Wakim took Victoria’s bowling attack to the cleaners and scored a rapid 44 off 37 with the help of four fours and a maximum. However, the right-handed batter fell against Elliott at the time when Tasmania needed 42 to win.

However, Jewell held his nerves and took Tasmania home with five wickets and 57 balls to spare. The opening batter also received the player of the match award for his stunning batting display.
