Plymouth Argyle confirmed the appointment of former Manchester United and Watford player Tom Cleverley as their new manager after getting relegated from the Championship, the second division of English football. The 35-year-old, who has already managed Watford last summer before getting sacked by them, will be in-charge of Plymouth Argyle on a three-year contract after their manager Miron Muslic left them last month to join Schalke in the managerial role.
After having an illustrious career in football, winning the Premier League title with Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson over a decade ago, Tom Cleverley had to retire due to injury in the summer of 2023, finishing up his playing days at Watford. Just under a year, he became the manager of Watford in March 2024, winning 20, drawing 14, and losing 26 matches out of 60 for the club before getting sacked earlier this summer since the club could only finish in 14th spot in the Championship.
It was clear throughout that Tom was the right fit for us: Plymouth Argyle chairman
While Tom Cleverley’s tenure was the longest at Watford since Javi Garcia’s time, which came to end after 18 months in the year 2019, he is just getting started as the manager in club football. The chairman of Plymouth Argyle, Simon Hallett, was quoted as saying on the 35-year-old’s appointment, “When we spoke to him he was completely aligned with the vision and ambitions of the club and it was clear throughout that Tom was the right fit for us.”
“He is young, passionate and did a great job at Watford. We are thrilled to bring him to Argyle and look forward to seeing the impact he has on the talented squad at his disposal,” the Plymouth Argyle manager further said. Moreover, the task is set to be cut out for Tom Cleverley in regards to taking the club back to the Championship, especially with the likes of Birmingham City and Wrexham, two of the biggest spending teams, not in the League One in the coming season.
