Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated the Indian athletes who represented the country at the Special Olympics Summer Games in Berlin. It is to be noted that the Indian contingent won 202 medals, which included 76 gold medals. The PM said that their success was “a celebration of the spirit of inclusivity and a testament to their perseverance”.

In a tweet, PM Modi praised the remarkable achievements of the Indian athletes and said that they had made the nation proud. “Congratulations to our incredible athletes who represented India at the Special Olympics Summer Games in Berlin and won 202 medals including 76 Gold Medals. In their success, we celebrate the spirit of inclusivity and applaud the perseverance of these remarkable athletes,” PM Modi tweeted.  The Special Olympics World Games 2023 came to a close on Sunday, after an evocative, emotional, and triumphant closing ceremony at the Brandenburg Gate in the center of the city of Berlin. The event, which was held from June 17 to June 25, saw more than 7,000 athletes from over 170 countries competing in 24 sports.

India had sent a contingent of 284 athletes, who participated in 14 sports such as athletics, badminton, basketball, cycling, football, powerlifting, swimming, and table tennis. The Indian athletes put up a stellar performance and bagged 202 medals - 76 gold, 69 silver, and 57 bronze - finishing fourth in the overall medal tally.

They notched six medals from the track events (2 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze) but the headlines would undoubtedly go to the gold medallists Aanchal Goyal (400m, Level B Female) and Ravimathi Arumugam (400m, Level C Female) who blew away their competition to take the top of the podium. The next edition of the Special Olympics World Games will be held in Orlando, Florida, USA in 2024.
