Rangers FC are set to play Fenerbahce away from home tonight at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey in the first leg of the Round of 16 of the UEFA Europa League (UEL). The Scottish Premiership team’s squad has travelled to Istanbul for the fixture as they look to take on the second placed team in the Turkish Super Lig. However, an unfortunate news has come to the light with regards to this fixture. One of the supporters of Rangers FC passed away after meeting with a road accident in the host city, a night before the match. Both the set of club officials and fans are deeply hurt by this incident.
Both Rangers FC and Fenerbahce have released official statements on their social handles to convey their sorrow and condolences towards the accident. The Rangers FC's official post offered its condolences to the supporters family and has said that they are in touch with the necessary authorities. They said, “We are devastated to have learned of the passing away of one of our supporters in a road traffic accident overnight in Istanbul,” while Fenerbahce were also very sympathetic about the incident.
An exciting tie coming up in the UEFA Europa League
Although this sad news has the club authorities concerned, the show must go on as both of these teams will take the pitch tonight for what will be an exciting game. Fenerbahce are currently second in their league table below Galatasaray and have a strong managerial figure in their team in the likes of Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese, who took over the club in July last year, has only suffered five defeats till now and has put Fenerbahce on second place in the league table, four points behind the league leaders.
Rangers FC on the other hand have a rather new and inexperienced manager in Barry Ferguson. He was appointed as the interim manager after the sacking of Phillipe Clement and has only managed the club for two games, with one win and one loss.
