Brazilian defender Marcelo, who served Real Madrid from 2007 to 2022, has announced his retirement from professional football.The 36-year-old was a part of Real Madrid squads that won five Champions League trophies and six La Liga titles. Back in 2023, he also added Copa Libertadores title to his profile with Fluminense. 

In 2022, the star Brazilian footballer left Real Madrid to be a part of Greek club Olympiacos. His stint with the Greek side was short-lived as he returned to his old club Fluminese, where he started his youth career at the age of 13. Marcelo’s equation with the Portugal great Cristiano Ronaldo is often discussed in the media as both greats achieved enjoyed sensational success as teammates in Real Madrid.

Posting a video to announce his retirement on X, Marcelo said, “My journey as a player ends here, but I still have so much to give to football. Thank you for everything.” The legend’s post made his fans emotional as they didn’t shy away from showering love and praises on the aggressive left-back. Marcelo’s career was celebrated by Real Madrid as La Liga’s defending champions reposted a clip on X related to the Brazilian football icon, captioned “Legend”.

Real Madrid also issued a statement that read, “Marcelo is part of the history of Real Madrid and is one of the great legends of our club and of world football.”

Marcelo's distinguished professional football career

Marcelo added a couple of Olympic medals to his profile back in 2008 and 2012, winning bronze and silver respectively while playing for Brazil. He also appeared for his national side in the 2014 and 2018 World Cup installments.

Appearing in 58 matches for his national team Brazil, he scored six goals while talking about his numbers for Real Madrid, the defender racked up 38 goals in 546 games. He won 35 trophies with the illustrious football club.
