Xabi Alonso, the Bayer Leverkusen manager, has confirmed his departure from the German club after being in-charge for more than two seasons. With Carlo Ancelotti expected to leave Real Madrid at the end of the season, the 43-year-old has been linked with them, and it is now understood that the Spanish club want to sign him on a contract before the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 starts, which will give him enough time to work on the team for it.

As per the report published in BBC Sport, Real Madrid are planning to have Xabi Alonso travel to Madrid on June 1, to ensure that he gets to prepare the players for their first match of the Club World Cup against Al-Hilal in Miami on June 18. It is further mentioned that Xabi Alonso didn’t have an intention to join Real Madrid this early in the summer, but both the parties had a conversation to the contrary, while the club felt that they didn’t need to appoint an interim manager for the tournament.

Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 4-3 in La Liga clash at home last night

While there is no official word on any of these new developments from Real Madrid, it could be a matter of time, especially since they are seven points behind leaders Barcelona in the La Liga standings with just three matches remaining. It was just a day ago when Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 4-3 in the league clash at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium despite going two goals up early and Kylian Mbappe scoring a hat-trick.

Moreover, when the departure of Xabi Alonso from Bayer Leverkusen was confirmed on Friday, May 9, he remarked, “I owe great thanks to Bayer 04 Leverkusen, my players and staff, all the employees of the club and last but not least the fantastic fans. Our success was the result of an outstanding team performance. This club, who showed exceptional trust in me, very much deserved to win the German league title for the first time.”

“My thanks and admiration go to everybody who helped to make this triumph happen including the DFB Pokal win in Berlin. Bayer 04 are ready for the future. The positive path will continue and I will be excited to follow it,” he concluded.
