The Indo-Australian pair of Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden, who were seeded second, bowed out of the US Open men’s doubles event after losing to Argentina’s Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni in straight sets on Sunday night, September 1. The defeat with a scoreline of 1-6, 5-7 for Bopanna alongside his partner Ebden meant that the Indian challenge at the US Open came to an end.
In the first set, Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden lost their serve twice, to find themselves 0-5 down, staring at a bagel. While they managed to avoid the bagel, holding their serve for the third time of asking, the first set went to the Argentine pairing of Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni with a 6-1 margin.
The second set saw Bopanna and Ebden put up a far better performance in terms of keeping themselves on serve. But when they were levelled at 5-5, the Indo-Australian pair lost their serve without taking a point before Gonzalez and Molteni converted their first match point, to book their spot in the quarter-finals of the US Open, where they will be facing Tim Kutz and Kevin Krawietz.
Moreover, Rohan Bopanna, who won the Australian Open with Matthew Ebden in January of this year, has made an announcement about retiring from Davis Cup recently. With that, it will be interesting to see whether he will return to defend his Australian Open title next year or retire from the sport altogether.
