Rohit Sharma-led Team India on Tuesday, March 4 went past the Australian challenge as they defeated the Steven Smith-led side by four wickets to advance to the final of ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025. Coming into the semi-final after registering three straight wins in the group stage, India went onto beat Australia in a rematch of the 2023 ODI World Cup final.
With this win, the 37-year-old Indian skipper also went onto to etch several never-seen before records in ICC events. Leading India into another final of an ICC tournament, Rohit Sharma became the first captain in the history of cricket to do so across all four formats. Earlier former India captain and one of the greats of the game, MS Dhoni had captained the side in three elusive finals, including T20 World Cup, ODI World Cup and Champions Trophy.

However, the World Test Championship started after MS Dhoni’s retirement from the longest format, Virat Kohli was the first captain to lead India in WTC Final. But on Tuesday, with a win over Australia, Rohit Sharma completed what MS Dhoni couldn’t as he will be seen leading the side in the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy.
Since the 37-year-old took over the captaincy in February 2022, India has entered the finals of every ICC tournament, thus making him the first skipper to achieve this rare feat. Under Rohit Sharma’s leadership, India entered the World Test Championship final in 2023. In the same year, India progressed into the final of ODI World Cup, but succumbed to a six-wicket defeat.
In 2024, Rohit Sharma led India to lift the T20 World Cup, ending their long awaited ICC trophy drought and will now walk out when India faces the winner of the second semi-final, which will be played between South Africa and New Zealand, on Sunday, March 9 in the summit clash in Dubai.
