Team India veteran opener Rohit Sharma got emotional on May 16, when his parents unveiled a stand on the legendary opener’s name at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. Rohit, who recently retired from Test cricket after serving India for 11 years, was accompanied by his family, teammates, and officials at the notable event. Rohit’s Mumbai Indians' (MI) teammates, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and veteran politician Sharad Pawar also marked their presence at the stadium. Rohit’s parents unveiled the stand named after their son who recently became the first India captain to win back-to-back International Cricket Council (ICC) trophies.
Discussing the memorable achievement, Rohit remarked, “I had never dreamt of what was going to happen today. You try to achieve a lot of milestones, but something like this is really special, because Wankhede is an iconic stadium and so many memories have been made here. To have my name here with the greats of the game and one of the world’s best political leaders, I cannot express the feeling. I am super grateful.” Alongside Rohit, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) honoured late India legend Ajit Wadekar and Sharad Pawar, who served as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president from 2005 to 2008.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis celebrated Rohit Sharma’s illustrious Test career on May 13
Rohit Sharma was spotted at Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s residence Varsha on May 13. The meeting was organised to celebrate the 38-year-old distinguished Test career, which lasted for 11 years. Playing for Team India from 2013 to 2024, he notched up 4301 runs in 116 innings of 67 Tests.
With Rohit’s retirement from red-ball cricket, his fans will get to see him in One-Day Internationals (ODI) only as the star player concluded his T20 International (T20I) career after guiding India to the second title triumph in the T20 World Cup last year.
