Following India’s dismal performance in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Rohit might not be given another opportunity from BCCI, to be a regular member of India’s Test squad, claims a PTI report. Replacing the veteran, Jasprit Bumrah might be given the reins of the Test side which will travel to England for a five-match series scheduled to be played from June to August. Bumrah has led India in three Tests thus far, and got a notable success against Australia at the Optus Stadium in November 2024. Under the pacer’s captaincy, India clinched a 295-run win against the Aussies.

"It is understood that the main bone of contention was that Bumrah is yet to start bowling full tilt and those in the know of things said that it is very difficult to get match-fit in such a short time. Rather, he can come back for Mumbai Indians in the IPL and then lead India in England as Rohit Sharma is unlikely to be picked for Tests again,” PTI wrote in its report.

Rohit has no plans to retire from Indian Test team

Back in January, when Rohit Sharma didn’t feature in India’s playing XI against Australia in the fifth Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), the 37-year-old said in a conversation with Star Sports that he has no plans to retire and he also revealed he had decided to keep himself away from the 11-member squad due to his miserable form.

“This is not a decision of retirement. I am not moving away from this game. But I took a decision to step away from this game because I was not able to score runs with the bat. There is no guarantee that I will score runs two months or five months from now. I have seen a lot of cricket, every minute, every second and everyday life changes. I believe that things will change but at the same time I have to be realistic as well. People sitting in the commentary box, or writing with a laptop in their hands, will not decide how my life goes", said Rohit during the Test series played in Sydney in January 2025.
