In the first two seasons, Sunrisers Eastern Cape won the title. For the unversed, Rashid Khan, the captain of MI Cape Town, won the toss and decided to bat first on a placid pitch served up at the Wanderers Stadium for the SA20 final. Ryan Rickelton gave a fiery start to MI Cape Town, sharing an opening stand of 51 runs in the first five overs with Rassie van der Dussen before Sunrisers Eastern Cape pacer Craig Overton got the key wicket of left-handed South African for 33 runs in 15 balls, an innings which included one four and four sixes.
After Reeza Hendricks was dismissed without troubling the scorers in the sixth over, MI Cape Town slowed down a touch with their scoring rate, especially as Rassie van der Dussen scored only 23 runs in 25 balls. At number five, George Linde provided some much needed impetus to the MI Cape Town innings with three sixes in quick succession before Liam Dawson picked up his second wicket of the evening.
The fifth wicket partnership of 50 runs between Connor Esterhuizen (39 off 26) and Dewald Brevis (38 off 18), which included multiple sixes from each batter, put MI Cape Town in a commanding position to reach a total in the range of 200 runs. But, the late wickets from Sunrisers Eastern Cape bowlers, five in the last 25 balls of the innings, ensured that the two-time defending champions were chasing a par total in the SA20 2025 final.
Richard Gleeson was the pick of the bowlers for Sunrisers Eastern Cape with figures of 2/22 in his four-over spell, ably supported by Marco Jansen and Liam Dawson with two wickets each. In pursuit of the 182-run target, to become reigning three-time SA20 champions, Sunrisers Eastern Cape lost two wickets in quick sucession. The middle order tried to build a partnership, however, Rashid Khan-led MI Cape Town didn't give any easy runs which made things difficult for Sunrisers Eastern Cape. The Orange Army kept on losing the wickets and eventually lost the match by 76 runs.
