India’s men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty failed to get the better of Malaysia’s men’s doubles pair of Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi on Saturday, January 18. The Indian duo suffered straight game defeat against their Malaysian counterpart, thus ending India’s campaign in the Super 750 badminton tournament.
The former champions, who won the title in 2022, were outplayed 18-21,14-21 in just 37 minutes by the world number three ranked Malaysian duo. With this, India not only ended their campaign at the ongoing tournament, this also marked the Satwik-Chirag duo’s second consecutive semifinal defeat, following their semifinal finish at the Malaysia Open Super 1000 tournament in Kaula Lumpur last week.
We should have been little more calmer: Chirag Shetty after semifinal defeat at India Open
Speaking after failing to secure the finals berth at the Indian Open 750 tournament in New Delhi, Chirag Shetty highlighted on the points which went wrong for them. “I think we should have closed down in the first game but credit to them they were really good in the service situations, which we didn't really expect because probably we didn't prepare for it. Having said that, we should have been little more calmer," Chirag said. "We didn't really expect so many flicks going into the game, especially from 15-12 and then we were receiving quite well but I think we should have been a bit more calmer," Satwiksairaj added.
Notably, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin of Malaysia will now take on Korea’s Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae, who are coming after winning the title at the Malaysia Open 2025. On the other hand, in the women's doubles final, eighth seeded Kim Hye Jeong and Kong Hee Yong of South Korea will face Japan's Arisa Igarashi and Ayako Sakuramoto.
