Six-time Asian Championships medallist Shiva Thapa and 2019 Asian Championships silver medallist Deepak Bhoria will head India’s 13-member contingent to the men's Boxing World Championships which is to be held from April 30 to May 14 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Shiva, who got India a bronze in World Championships in Doha will look forward to winning gold this time in Uzbekistan. He will take part in the 63.5kg weight category. However, his fellow Indian-squad leader, Deepak, will take on the country's hopes in the 51kg Flyweight category.
Deepak made it to the global platform for India after taking his opponent 2016 Rio Olympic gold medallist and 2019 World Champion Shakhobidin Zoirov of Uzbekistan at the Strandja Memorial tournament. In fact, he is one of the most improved players of the game in recent times. Ajay Singh, the President of the Boxing Federation of India in an official statement said, "Men's team has been working extremely hard and I wish them all the best. I am confident each one of them will make the country proud.”
The Indian contingent will leave for Tashkent on April 17 to attend a multi-national training camp ahead of the World Championships. Speaking of the Indian squad, it will also have 2022 Asian Championships bronze medallist Mohammad Hussamuddin, who will fight in the 57kg category at the event. Along with him, Govind Sahani (48kg category), Sachin Siwach (54kg category), and Nishant Dev (71kg category) are also a part of India's 13-member squad for the world class tournament.
