India opener Shubman Gill met head coach of the team Gautam Gambhir amidst the headlines of the 25-year-old being the top contender to become India’s Test captain in the upcoming days. After Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the longest format of the sport on May 7, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will have to fill the leadership vacuum in India’s red-ball team soon as the side will begin the World Test Championship 2025-27 campaign, with the five-match Test series against England on June 20. Amidst these developments, several reports have claimed that Gill will be filling Rohit’s Test captaincy boots.

On May 17, a report from Times of India claimed that Gill recently visited Gautam Gambhir at the latter’s residence in Delhi. Both held a meeting with each other for almost four to five hours. The report also asserted that the BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar also met the young opener following the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 game between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Wankhede Stadium on May 6.

The BCCI seems to be impressed with Gill’s captaincy performance for Titans in the ongoing IPL and the board is now seeing him as a long-term captaincy option for India. "He has shown impressive leadership qualities in the way he has led GT, who are currently topping the table this season," the TOI report quoted a BCCI source.

Shubman Gill will look to lead GT from the front against Delhi Capitals

After the resumption of IPL 2025, Gujarat Titans will take on Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on May 18. Titans are leading the table with eight wins in 11 matches. With GT’s three matches left in the round-robin stage, their captain Shubman Gill will strive to help his team end the league round at the top of the tally.

Gill is currently the third-highest run-scorer in the competition, notching up 508 runs in 11 matches at a strike rate of 152.55. His opening partner Sai Sudharsan has also looked impressive in the tournament as the left-handed batter is a place above his captain on the list of batters with most runs. In 11 matches, Sudharsan has scored 509 runs with five fifties.
