Spanish football prosecutors accused football chief Luis Rubiales of sexual assault and coercion for kissing football player on her lips. After the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, Rubiales kissed Spain player Jenni Hermoso without her consent. This action by the Spanish Football Federation (REFF) President sparked worldwide backlash. The incident took place during the medal ceremony following Spain's triumph over England to win the title.

Prosecutors filed their case for potential criminal charges against Rubiales to Spain's National Court in Madrid two days after the football player formally accused him of sexual assault. After Rubiales refused to step down from his position on August 26, the FIFA suspended him from the post.

Not only this, but the 46-year-old also delivered a speech in the general assembly of his federation and said that he was a victim of 'witch hunt' and 'false feminism'. According to the official statement of the prosecutor's office, "The prosecutors request that Luis Rubiales be questioned as an accused (party) and Jenni Hermoso as a victim."

Now, a judge at the court must decide whether to accept or archive the request. If the judge accepts the case, then a magistrate will be assigned to head an investigation which will end either with a recommendation whether the case will go for a trial or dismissal.
