On Wednesday, April 23, the Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by seven wickets in match number 41 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. After restricting the hosts to 143/8 in their allotted 20 overs, courtesy a four-wicket haul from Trent Boult, on the back of Rohit Sharma’s 70 off 46, MI chased the target in 15.4 overs with 26 balls to spare.
For the unversed, after winning the toss, Hardik Pandya, the captain of Mumbai Indians (MI), decided to bowl first, thus inviting the hosts to put the score on the board first. The decision proved to be right for the visitors as they dismissed the SRh top order inside the powerplay. At the end of the powerplay overs, the SRH looked in serious trouble as their scoreboard read 24/4. With Heinrich Klaasen rising up for the hosts, he stitched a crucial partnership with Abhinav Manohar to eventually put 143 runs on the board.
However, the score of 143 is said to be a bit slow on the Hyderabad pitch, but the 99-run stand between Klaasen and Manohar was the highest for the sixth wicket or lower for the Hyderabad based franchise. For the visitors, Trent Boult starred with the ball, picking up four wickets in his four-over spell, Deepak Chahar claimed two whereas Jasprit Bumrah and skipper Hardik Pandya picked one each.
Rohit Sharma's 70 off 46 guides MI to third position in IPL 2025 points table
In the run chase, MI lost Ryan Rickelton early in the innings as he was dismissed by Jaydev Unadkat for a score of 11 off eight balls. Rohit Sharma was then joined by Will Jacks in the middle, but the latter was dismissed by a combined effort from Zeeshan Ansari and Abhinav Manohar. Suryakumar Yadav then helped Rohit, stitching a crucial partnership but Rohit Sharma’s stay was cut short by Eshan Malinga.
With 14 needed off 32 deliveries, Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav finished the proceedings for the Mumbai-based franchise as they chased the total in 15.4 overs and completed four wins in a row in the ongoing edition. Moreover, with this win, MI climbed up to third position in the points table whereas SRH continue to reel in the bottom half with only two wins from eight games.
