Former India fast bowling coach Bharat Arun and former South Africa cricketer Jonty Rhodes were named as new members of the Sri Lankan coaching staff. The Sri Lankan coaching staff also appointed former Sri Lankan physiotherapist Alex Kountouri. The board's decision to hire new members came after their recent meeting of the Executive Committee of SLC on January 16, 2024. The meeting was headed by board President Shammi Silva.
Apart from hiring new members, the board also took some crucial decisions to improve the game in the country. The SLC released a statement, which read, “Sri Lanka Cricket decided to obtain the services of some of the best-known talents in international cricket to provide advanced training for local coaches, trainers, and physiotherapists to enhance their skills and competencies by conducting periodic training programs in selected areas.”
“Towards this, the Executive Committee decided to obtain the services of former South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes, who is a specialist fielding coach—former India National Team fast bowling coach Bharat Arun—and former Sri Lanka National Team physiotherapist Alex Kountouri.”
The committee also introduced an award for the junior cricketers who displayed extraordinary skills in the Sri Lanka school cricket tournaments. The cricketers from the U15 category to the U17 category will be recognised under the scheme. Apart from this, the club also decided to increase the match fee of the players participating in the National Super League (NSL) as well as recognise the retiring match officials.
