The Sri Lanka men's team has raised concerns about security in England about the anti-immigrant riots that have erupted in various cities across the country. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB ) has reportedly responded by reassuring Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and the team about the security arrangements. The few Lankan players in England have been anxious about riots with no apparent security plan in place.
Sri Lanka are set to play three Tests in England with the first game starting on August 21 in Manchester. The teams then head to Lord's for the second Test on August 29 before finishing at The Oval on September 6. The seven Lankan players and two support staff have requested SLC for better security near London, as per Cricinfo.
The report also quoted Sri Lanka's team manager Mahinda Halangoda, who revealed that he has asked the England Cricket Board to make the necessary arrangements. Halangoda said, "I raised the issue with them, but the ECB responded very quickly and sent us their comprehensive security arrangements. We'll be having a security liaison on the tour from them as well."
The Cricinfo report also revealed a player's account who shared that the Sri Lankan contingent is concerned about security. The unnamed player said, "Most of the issues seem not to be close to where we are but everyone is still a little concerned."
"We can't really go out to dinner or do anything like that. Mostly we stay in the hotel. No one wants to run into trouble and get beaten up. We've asked the board to try and ask for some security for us until the main team arrives, but we haven't heard anything back yet."
