Match Preview
The ninth edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will kick off on June 1 with the first-time participants USA clashing against Canada in the season opener. In the second clash of the marquee tournament, action will move to the Providence Stadium in Guyana for the two-time world T20 champions and co-hosts West Indies clashing against Papua New Guinea.
This is the first time that West Indies are hosting an ICC tournament match since the 2010 World T20. After they failed to qualify for the final event during the 2022 edition, they will hope to bounce back and make a mark for themselves in the current edition.
Win Possibility
The forthcoming match between the West Indies and Papua New Guinea will be the first time both teams will be up against each other in the shortest format. The teams have faced each other once in the ODI format six years ago. The match saw the Windies registering a six-wicket win over their counterparts. West Indies have declined as a cricketing force over the years, and once regarded as one of the most lethal teams, the Caribbeans failed to even qualify for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023.
Not only this, but they also missed out on the Super 12s stage in the previous edition of the T20 World Cup in Australia. Papua New Guinea, on the other hand, have played at one ICC event, and lost all their group stage matches at the T20 World Cup 2021. The team have an experienced set of players in their squad, but they are majorly reliant on names like captain Assadollah Vala and vice-captain Charles Amini.
Since Papua New Guinea are comparatively new to the ICC stage, much experienced West Indies are expected to win their opening game in the tournament.
Predicted Powerplay Score and Average First Inning Score
One of the most popular cricketing venues in West Indies, the Providence Stadium in Guyana is set to host the clash between West Indies and Papua New Guinea. The venue has hosted a total of 29 T20 matches and has a first inning average of 124. Considering this, we think the first inning score in the upcoming game is expected to be around 140-160 and powerplay can hover around 50-55. However, toss is going to play a major role in the forthcoming game and the predicted scores.
