Tejaswin Shankar created history as he won India’s first medal at CWG 2022 in men's high jump final. He registered the third place finish with a leap of 2.22m. Shankar was tied with Bahamas' former world and CWG champion Donald Thomas. The 23-year-old won the country's first medal in the men's high jump event, as he made lesser fouls during the event.

Tejaswin was born on 21 December 1998 in Saket in South Delhi. He completed his primary education at the Sardar Patel Vidyalaya in New Delhi, where he played cricket until eighth grade before his P.E teacher suggested to switch to high jump. 

He then started getting success at inter-school athletics meets. His father, Harishankar - who was a lawyer passed away in 2014, battling blood cancer. Shankar received a four-year athletics scholarship to Kansas State University in 2017 where he took business administration as his major subject.

Shankar also won the gold medal at the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games in Apia, with a Games record of 2.14 metre. He then won silver at the 2016 South Asian Games in Guwahati with a 2.17m jump.
