Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra won the silver medal in the men's javelin throw at the Commonwealth Games on Friday after Sri Lanka's Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage produced a sensational 89.75m throw to clinch gold at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow. Competing in chilly 14-degree conditions, Neeraj managed a season's best effort of 85.83m, while India's Yash Vir Singh secured the bronze medal with a personal-best throw of 85.41m.

Speaking to the press, Neeraj said he was happy with the silver and more so because it had two Indians on the podium. โ€œI am very happy. It was similar at the Asian Games in 2023, where I won gold and Kishore Jena won silver. Yash Vir has done his personal best here, which was very important for him. And I am very happy that we are on the podium. I am always happy whenever the national anthem is played. But itโ€™s ok [to win silver] as I did my personal best and my comeback is getting better,โ€ he said.

Yash Vir Singh's final throw seals historic bronze and India's double podium finish

For most of the competition, Yash did not appear to be in medal contention. He was battling against Douw Smit and Pieters, while two fouls in his first and fourth attempts, along with a best throw of 81.33m, left him with a mountain to climb heading into his final attempt.

Yash Vir Singh produced the throw of his life on his sixth and final attempt to script a remarkable comeback and clinch a historic bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026. The 24-year-old's javelin landed at a personal-best 85.41m, helping India complete a memorable double on the podium alongside silver medallist Neeraj Chopra.

"I was telling him the same thing that I told him in the qualification. Maar jatka (Go for it, give it everything.) In the final too, I told him, 'Itโ€™s the last throw.โ€

Those were the words of a proud Neeraj Chopra as he stood beside a smiling Yash after both Indians secured silver and bronze, respectively, in the men's javelin final at the Commonwealth Games.
