Harry Kane, the Tottenham Hotspur and England captain, has been the subject of intense transfer speculation this summer, as he reportedly wants to leave the club in search of trophies. According to reports, Tottenham have accepted a bid from Bayern for their star man for a fee of £94.5 million. Michael Owen has given Kane contradictory advice regarding his future.
The Liverpool legend, Michael Owen, knows a thing or two about loyalty and ambition. He made 216 appearances for Liverpool and won several honors, including the Ballon d’Or. Owen advised the striker to stay at Tottenham instead of going to Bayern in search of titles. He discredited any titles won at a club like Bayern, which dominates the Bundesliga. He claimed that becoming a top scorer for Spurs is a bigger achievement than any title.
“I know @FCBayern are a massive club and I have huge respect for them but if I were @HKane I’d stay put. There’s no great achievement in winning a trophy with them. @realmadrid I would understand. Or one or two top @premierleague clubs for that matter. Becoming the all-time Premier League top goal scorer @SpursOfficial is a bigger achievement than winning the league in a country dominated by 1 team.” He tweeted.
Owen’s advice is contradictory, as he is telling Kane to do what he suggested himself a couple of years ago. At the time, he had opined that he should go out in search of trophies since it would be a ‘shame' if he finished his career trophyless. He tweeted, “You can’t blame @HKane wanting a new challenge. It’s a short career and @SpursOfficial are miles off winning things at present. It was now or never. He’s shown great loyalty, but it would be a huge shame if he finished his career with no medals to show for it.”
Owen’s current tweet could be seen as absolute disrespect to Bayern Munich since, throughout history, they have been Champions League contenders and winners as well as domestic leaders. Kane wanted his future decided by Friday night, with Tottenham’s Premier League campaign getting underway at Brentford on Sunday. With Bayern playing in the Super Cup on Saturday against RB Leipzig and beginning their Bundesliga campaign at Werder Bremen on August 18, it is anticipated that a decision will be made fairly quickly.
Kane is currently Spurs and England’s all-time highest goalscorer, having scored over 350 goals for both club and country. Kane is currently 47 goals off Alan Shearer, who holds the record for most goals scored in the Premier League, and it will be a toss-up between chasing after the individual record or trophies.
