World Cup winner Lionel Messi spoke to Simplemente Futbol prior to his latest MLS match against Columbus Crew and the Argentine has provided some major updates about his future in the sport and also with the Argentina national team. Messi has spoken about whether he will play in the upcoming 2026 World Cup, which is set to be held in multiple cities across North America; the same region where Messi currently plays with Inter Miami. Messi stressed on the health and fitness factor, saying that those two would be the main points to consider when making any decision about his future given his age now.
Sharing his thoughts about playing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Messi said, “This year will be key to see what I decide regarding the 2026 World Cup.” He further went on to add by saying, “I would lie if I told you I'm not thinking about that (World Cup)”, as fans wait eagerly to know whether Messi will be there to defend the World Cup crown the following year. Messi’s long-time friend and current teammate Luis Suarez had also mentioned about Messi’s desire to play for his country in the 2026 World Cup and how he was not looking to retire from professional football immediately.
Lionel Messi has missed 7 games for Argentina with injury since 2022 World Cup
Messi has been influential for the Argentina national team even after the 2022 World Cup win and had guided them to a Copa America victory in 2024 against Columbia. But since the last few years, Messi has repeatedly missed few games for club and country owning to small injuries and discomforts, which is understandable given his age. He was also recently sidelined in Argentina’s WC qualifier matches against Uruguay and Brazil due to an adductor problem.
The Argentina national team seems to be doing well with Lionel Messi’s presence as their coach Scaloni is reportedly trying to build a team without dependence on Messi; a team for the future. But with that said, the possibility of Messi playing in the 2026 World Cup can never be ruled out given his massive influence on the game and team and also his ability to deliver quality football even at this age.
