The ninth game of the WPL 2025 between the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and UP Warriorz at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on February 24 saw the first tie of the illustrious league which kicked off in 2023. In the end, RCB Women failed to hold their nerves as UPW emerged victorious in the Super Over. Home team supporters didn’t get to see their team winning the match but for cricket buffs, it was a blockbuster contest as both sides showcased their best to pull off the triumph.
At the iconic Bengaluru stadium, it was the fifth tied game in white-ball formats of competitive cricket. After witnessing the amazing WPL contest in Bengaluru, let’s revisit all five tied matches from the past at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. 5. Karnataka vs Hyderabad in Vijay Hazare Trophy 2013-14
Back in 2014, when Karnataka hosted Hyderabad in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2013-14, both teams walked back with a tie. Following the score of 249, Hyderabad got the captain Akshath Reddy’s innings of 57 off 76. Ashish Reddy also hit a fifty to take his side close to the target but couldn’t hold his nerves to help his team win the contest. In the end, both teams satiated with a tie.
4. RCB vs UPW in WPL 2025
In the crucial WPL 2025 match, UPW captain Deepti Sharma won the toss and elected to field first. RCB put up a total of 180/4 riding on the batting efforts of Ellyse Perry (unbeaten 90 off 56) and Danni Wyatt-Hodge’s 57 off 41. Chasing the target, UPW put up an underwhelming show but their tailender Sophie Ecclestone hit 33 off 19 which helped them to level the scores. On the last delivery, Ecclestone got run out while striving to steal the run.
In the Super Over, Warriorz delivered a target of only nine runs but the hosts failed to counter Ecclestone, who contained the defending champions at their score of four. The spin wizard’s disciplined bowling tied the hands of both dangerous RCB openers Richa Ghosh and Smriti Mandhana. 3. India vs Afghanistan in 2024 T20I
In January 2024, Bengaluru hosted India’s T20I match against Afghanistan where the Men in Blue posted a colossal score of 212/4 in their 20 overs. In the initial stage of the match, India saw themselves in a perilous situation as they lost their four wickets at a score of 22. However, captain Rohit Sharma led from the front and hit his fifth T20I ton. His unbeaten 121 off 69 helped India reach the massive score.
Pursuing the total, Afghanistan also looked extraordinary and succeeded in levelling the score. Bowling the final over for India, Mukesh Kumar splurged 18 runs but stopped the visitors from crossing the total. In the Super Over, India had to defend only 12 runs and Ravi Bishnoi was handed the task to save the score. The leg-spinner stood tall in the crunch situation and got the better of Mohammad Nabi and Rahmanullah Gurbaz to take his team home. In the end, Rohit’s century got him the POTM award.
2. RCB vs DC in IPL IPL 2013
M. Chinnaswamy Stadium got their first and only tied IPL match in 2013. The contest between RCB and DC at the distinguished venue ended in the hosts’ favour but they got a headache from the visitors earlier. Chasing 153, Virat Kohli stepped up and played an impactful knock of 65 off 50.
In the final over, the home team were required to score 12 runs to win the game but Irfan Pathan’s bowling brilliance kept them away from the winning moment for a while. However, things got better in the Super Over as their pacer Ravi Rampaul defended 15 runs successfully and delivered a cheerful moment to the team’s supporters. Virat became the POTM for his half-century.
1. India vs England in World Cup 2011
India’s 2011 World Cup campaign recorded a tied game against England in Bengaluru. Batting first after winning the toss, the Men in Blue racked up 338 runs on the board. Sachin Tendulkar hit 120 off 115 and recorded his 47th ODI ton. Gautam Gambhir (51 of 61) and Yuvraj Singh (58 off 50) also scored their half-centuries in the massive game.
England came back strongly in the second innings as their skipper Andrew Strauss produced a masterful knock of 158 off 145. However, the visitors lost the momentum in the final stage of the match and settled for a tie due to nervousness. Strauss received the POTM award for his excellent batting display.
