However, some players are still trying to find their feet in a different setup. The window also saw some blockbuster sagas as certain players went out of their way to make a move in which some succeeded while others failed.
Here in this article, SportsTiger presents you possibly with a list of possibly the biggest hits and misses of the 2022 Summer Transfer Window. The list includes some of the top signings and some failed transfers that seemed possible but fell through for multiple reasons.
Hits of the 2022 Summer Transfer Window:
Erling Haaland:
The Norwegian wonder kid tore up the Bundesliga before moving to the Premier League Champions Manchester City for a fee of 75 million euros. Experts questioned Haaland’s transfer to the Sky Blues with Pep Guardiola’s history with number nines. But proving all these doubters wrong, Haaland is the leading EPL scorer as he has already netted nine goals in five games
Gabriel Jesus:
Erling Haaland’s move to Man City triggered Gabriel Jesus’ transfer to Arsenal for 45 million Euros. The Brazilian forward, like Haaland, has been on point from the opening game as he already has three goals and three assists in the first five games. Similarly, Gabriel’s magical form has helped the Gunners be the only team with the perfect record in the EPL.
Lisandro Martinez:
Nicknamed ‘The Butcher’, Lisandro Martinez took some time to find his feet as Manchester United lost their first two games. But since their victory over Liverpool, Martinez has been the defensive foundation for the Red Devils as they went on to record three straight wins in the Premier League. He even bagged United's player of the month award for his impressive outings against Liverpool and Southampton in August.
Robert Lewandowski:
The Polish striker pushed for a surprise move to Barcelona and has fit into Xavi’s new system like clockwork. Robert Lewandowski, barring the first game, has looked like the same player we saw dominating in Germany as he scored four goals in three games for the Catalans. If Lew continues his form through the season the 42.5 million Euros fee might begin to look like a bargain.
Sadio Mane:
Replacing a player like Robert Lewandowski is nearly impossible but not for Sadio Mane as ever since the former Liverpool man has dawned the Bayern Munich colours, he has been unstoppable. The Senegal international has continued his incredible form through the 2021-22 season and has already netted three goals in four games for the Bavarians.
Misses of the 2022 Summer Transfer Window:
Milan Skriniar:
Paris Saint-Germain missed out on multiple attempts to sign Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar as their top defensive target. The Parisians made multiple big money offers for the Slovak but Inter didn’t budge and was adamant about not selling him. Like PSG, Chelsea also tried signing Skriniar but any further talks were quickly shut down.
Frenkie de Jong:
The biggest transfer saga of the season involved Frenkie de Jong who was the biggest target for Manchester United even before the start of the transfer window. Everything about the transfer was complete between Barcelona and Man United but the Dutchman didn’t agree to personal terms as the Red Devils made multiple offers where they were ready to pay the player’s deferred wages that were around 18-20 million Euros.
Cristiano Ronaldo:
Continue with Manchester United, Cristiano Ronaldo was adamant about moving out of Old Trafford for Champions League football but couldn’t find a suitor across the top leagues in Europe. His agent Jorge Mendes was one of the busiest men during the window but couldn’t find a club despite agreeing to extreme wage reduction proposals.
Edson Álvarez:
Ajax Amsterdam made a lot of money in the transfer window but halted this selling spree after Antony’s move to Manchester United. This decision cost Edson Álvarez a dream move to Chelsea who was ready to quadruple his wages along with paying a transfer of €50 million. But the Dutch club immediately pulled the plug on the deal.
Bamba Dieng:
Marseille striker Bamba Dieng had one of the most entertaining deadline day stories as he first had reached a verbal agreement to join Leeds. But as he was going to the airport for his flight to England, the French club Nice bid for him. So the Senegalese striker rejected the opportunity to sign Leeds and travelled to Nice for medical, which he surprisingly failed and remained as a Marseille player.
