Yashasvi Jaiswal, the young Mumbai batsman who has been selected for the India Test squad for the tour of the West Indies, has recalled the words of advice he received from former India captain and batting legend Rahul Dravid. Jaiswal said that Dravid, who was his coach at the Under-19 level, had told him to focus on one ball at a time and treat every ball as important.
The 21-year-old earned his maiden Test call-up after his impressive performance in the IPL 2023, where he scored 625 runs in 14 matches for Rajasthan Royals at an average of 48.08. In the Ranji Trophy, Jaiswal has amassed 1845 runs at an average of 80.21 in 26 innings so far playing for Mumbai.
The Mumbai batter also revealed that he got a message from Dravid, who wished him luck for his Test debut. The Rajasthan Royals star said that Dravid had been a great mentor for him and had helped him improve his game. Jaiswal told TOI, "I got a message from Rahul Dravid sir. He wished me luck after my selection (for the India Test squad).”
Earlier when Dravid was the head of the NCA and the U19 coach, Jaiswal had mentioned his influence on his batting. “One ball at a time – this is the mantra I have learned from Rahul, sir. He always says – ‘treat every ball as important.’ He has solutions for everything. He is a great mentor. Honestly, my game has improved a lot because of his guidance" Jaiswal had said in 2019 ahead of the U19 World Cup.
