A few media reports have claimed that Indian wrestler Sushil Kumar has been arrested in Punjab in connection with the murder of Sagar Rana. The two-time Olympic medalist was on the run since the death of the 23-year-old junior wrestler Sagar. Earlier, Delhi police had announced ₹1 lakh reward on any information leading to his arrest. Additionally, Delhi police had been conducting raids in Delhi-NCR and neighbouring states to get hold of the wrestler.

Government lawyer denies the rumour

However, the government lawyer has now denied the rumour and cleared that the wrestler is still on the run.

"Some media channels have reported that the Wrestler Sushil Kumar has been arrested but it is not true," the lawyer was quoted as saying.

Sagar was killed and his associates Sonu and Amit Kumar had been severely injured in a conflict at Sushil Kumar’s stadium in Delhi. They’re alleged to have been attacked by Sushil Kumar and his associates. The Delhi Police had filed an FIR in the case under sections 302 (murder), 308 (culpable homicide), 365 (kidnapping), 325 (causing grevious hurt), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 506 (criminal intimidation).

Earlier, a Delhi court had issued non-bailable warrants in opposition to Sushil and 6 others. Sushil Kumar, who initially denied any involvement in Sagar Rana’s loss of life, later fled. Police groups from the states of Punjab and Haryana had been on excessive alert from the past few days for Sushil Kumar.

Police traced the last location of absconding Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar to Punjab’s Bathinda on Friday. Several teams were then formed and conducted raids in several parts of Haryana and Punjab to nab the absconding wrestler. Police were then able to arrest Sushil and his accomplice on Saturday after zeroing in on their location.
