Veteran Indian hockey player, Lalit Upadhyay on Sunday, June 22 announced retirement from international career, which spanned across for a decade. Lalit, the Indian hockey team forward, put down curtains on his international career, which saw him win two Olympic medals, bronze at Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and another bronze at the Paris Olympic 2024.
The 31-year-old, who has been a key member of the Indian team, took to X to announce his decision, writing, “Today, I announce my retirement from international hockey. It’s a tough moment, but one every athlete must face one day. It has been the greatest honour and pride of my life to represent our country ������ Thank you for everything. �� ”

Lalit announced his decision through a heartfelt social media post shortly after India's final match of the European leg of the FIH Pro League 2024-25 season against Belgium. "This journey began in a small village, with limited resources but limitless dreams. From facing a sting operation to standing on the Olympic podium — not once, but twice -- it's been a path full of challenges, growth, and unforgettable pride," Lalit wrote.
"Becoming an Olympian from my city after 26 years is something I'll always carry with honor and gratitude," he added, while expressing his gratitude towards all the key members who have been part of his journey.
Speaking of the UP-born, during his playing days, he represented India in 183 matches at the senior level, scoring 67 goals. Seeing him draw curtain, Hockey India also congratulated Upadhyay, writing, “Thank you Lalit for your incredible contribution to Indian Hockey.”
“Your journey has been an inspiration to many upcoming players. We wish you all the very best for your future. Hope you continue to inspire many to pick-up that hockey stick and dazzle the world with it,” they further added.
