The UK government has confirmed the launch of an independent regulator of English football to keep a check on clubs and protect the culture of English football. This step was taken after recommendations by a fan-led review caused by the formation of the European Super League.

The regulator will aim to stop English clubs from joining competitions like the ESL which can harm the domestic game. This step will also hope to prevent financial failures seen at numerous clubs like Bury and Macclesfield. The regulator will also create more rigid tests for owners and directors in order to protect clubs and fans.

This initiative will also bring power to the fans to stop owners from changing a club's name, badge, and traditional kit colours. The regulator will also ensure fair distribution of money through the English football pyramid from the Premier League.

The UK government released a statement confirming the new independent regulator plans on Wednesday: "The English game remains one of the UK's greatest cultural exports, with clubs and leagues around the world modelling themselves on its success. That is why the government is today taking the necessary and targeted steps to ensure that continues for generations."

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak addressed this step taken by the government and stated how the regulator will allow the protection of a 165-year-old heritage and traditions of England clubs for future generations. Sunak said, "Since its inception over 165 years ago, English football has been bringing people together, providing a source of pride for communities and inspiration to millions of fans across the country.”

“Yet despite the success of the sport both at home and abroad, we know that there are real challenges that threaten the stability of clubs both big and small. The new plans will protect the rich heritage and traditions of our much-loved clubs and safeguard the beautiful game for future generations."
