Sports betting has been a very prominent way for people to make money nowadays. However, if their prediction does not fall into place, they end up insulting and damaging the reputation of the players on which they are betting. Some of the angry people who lose their money due to sports betting end up harassing the athlete or the team on social media, taking out their frustration over the athlete through abuse and death threats, etc, sometimes even out in the open, which happened to be the case with Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina.
Svitolina has opened up about the extreme problems that she has been facing following the loss against Naomi Osaka in the Montreal Open. The 30-year-old posted screenshots on her instagram story that showcased the abuse and death threats she had been receiving, stating that most of them came from the angry sports bettors.
If your moms saw your messages, they’d be disgusted: Svitolina responds to abuse received by sports bettors
Elina Svitolina responded to the hate comments from all the bettors and said, “To all the bettors: I’m a mom before I’m an athlete. The way you talk to women, to mothers, is shameful. If your moms saw your messages, they’d be disgusted.” Other than that, she has reportedly received racial comments about her husband and French tennis star Gael Monfils from people showing their support towards Russia amid the ongoing war since she hails from Ukraine.
The Women’s Tennis Association and International Tennis Federation recently published a report which analysed that there were 458 players that faced direct abuse or threat, with 40% of the detected abuse linked to “angry gamblers.” This problem is being faced by many athletes all around the world just because of some poor performances.
