The Women's Premier League (WPL) team UP Warriorz (UPW) have decided to part ways with their head coach Jon Lewis ahead of the upcoming 2026 season. The social media account of the team posted on their handles that Lewis will not remain their head coach as they have mutually decided to not continue together ahead of their new campaign.
This decision has come after UP Warriorz had gone through a difficult patch earlier this year in the WPL, finishing on the bottom of the league last season. The UP Warriorz will be in search of a capable candidate to replace him and manage their team and help them to make a comeback in the next season to build the right team to become strong contenders for the title in the WPL next season, forgetting the past failures and beginning a new chapter with the right person for the job.
UP Warriorz express their gratitude to Jon Lewis in official statement
Jon Lewis became the head coach of the UP Warriorz in the inaugural season of the WPL in 2023. He went on to have a flying start that season after the team managed to secure their place in the playoffs that season, they lost to Mumbai Indians (MI) in the knockout stages who were later crowned as Champions of the league in the inaugural campaign. In the second season UP Warriorz finished second from the bottom after having lost five out of eight games in the season.
In the latest season, due to their regular captain Alyssa Healy getting injured, the Indian off-spinner Deepti Sharma had to fill in her role, despite all their efforts they finished last on the table. Overall, under the coaching of Jon Lewis, Warriorz won nine out of 25 matches and also hold the record of highest runs in a WPL match scoring a blazing 225 against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the latest season of WPL.
"From day one, you believed in us. Through the highs, the learnings, and everything in between. Thank You, Coach Jon Lewis, for leading with heart, calm, and belief. You’ll always be a part of the Warriorz Family," the franchise expressed on its social media accounts which confirmed the news to the public.
