A massive fire broke out in two joined apartment blocks in the Spanish city of Valencia on Thursday, killing at least four, and injuring 15 while nearly 20 people are missing, according to the emergency services. La Liga giants Real Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and Sevilla among others offered their condolences to the families of the victims on social media.
The 14-story building, which contains 138 flats and was home to 450 residents, caught fire according to the newspaper El Pais. Reports claimed that the fire broke out on the fourth floor and according to experts, the fire spread rapidly due to the highly flammable cladding on the building.
La Liga clubs offer condolences to victims' families
La Liga clubs including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and Sevilla among others took to X and sympathised with the deceased families and extended their support to the affected. Real Madrid stated, "Real Madrid C. F., its president, and its Board of Directors would like to express their deepest sympathy for the victims of the fire that has affected the city of Valencia in the last few hours and express their solidarity with all those affected and with all the people of Valencia.
"Real Madrid would like to express its condolences and affection to the families of the deceased and wish a speedy recovery to the injured, to whom we convey all our strength and affection."
Barcelona took to X and wrote, "FC Barcelona offers its condolences to the families of the victims of the fire in Valencia and lends its support to those affected."
Valencia confirmed "some residents of the building have lost their life" in the fire as they stated, "We are extremely devastated to confirm some residents of the building have lost their life in the Valencia fire and some others are still missing. Lots of respect to the heroes who continue working in the firefighting and medical assistance. We would like to send our sincere condolences to the families and relatives of the victims. Rest in peace."
Sevilla also took to X and wrote, "Everyone at Sevilla FC would like to express our sincere condolences to the families of the victims of the fire in Valencia, as well as sending our support to those still missing and the emergency services who have been courageously working to rescue people. Rest in peace."
22 fire crews tackled the blaze
Valencia Mayor María José Catalá wrote on social media, "Please stay away from the area of the fire to let the emergency services do their work." According to authorities, 22 firefighting crews tackled the blaze, which got worse due to the wind. Apart from that, five ambulances responded to the incident and a field hospital has been set up in the area.
