Star Indian cricketers, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma might have retired from T20Is and Test cricket, they continue to be active in the 50-over format, the ODIs. While the duo announced retirement from T20I after India’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2024, they put down curtains to their illustrious Test career in May 2025, midway through the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, Rohit Sharma’s decision to retire from Test was still accepted seeing his poor run of form, Virat Kohli’s call came as a shock.
However, over a period of time, everyone accepted it with Kohli being adamant on his decision with age also calling upon him. As the veteran duo is focused on ODIs, they eye to make it to the 2027 ODI World Cup squad. Although, they will be wanting to play their heart out for the Indian team, but with recent talks around their future hitting the roof, recent reports have come as a shock.

In the latest reports which have been making rounds on social media, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma - both do not fit in the scheme of things for the marquee ICC event, set to be held in 2027. "Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma do not fit in our plans for the ODI World Cup 2027," a source from the team management was quoted as saying in a report citing Dainik Jagran. Furthermore, the report even claimed that the duo wanted to be a part of the England tour but were informed by the selectors that they are unlikely to be picked.
However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has time and again refuted the reports of pressurizing the veteran duo to call off time on their cricketing career, this once again comes as a big talk. Additionally, the report has also claimed that the two will have to play Vijay Hazare trophy if they want to keep themselves in contention.
As far as it is concerned, the duo is set to return to competitive cricket in the ODI series against Australia, scheduled to be held in October after the Bangladesh tour was pushed back to September 2026.
