As the Indian cricket team sees major shift once again with three of the veterans of the game, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin announcing retirement from Test cricket, the head coach, Gautam Gambhir, along with the selection committee will have a tough task to replace them. As they toil to get a perfect combination, Gambhir was questioned about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s future in the ODI cricket.
Seeing the next marquee event as the T20 World Cup, followed by the ODI World Cup, Gambhir dropped a big statement on the two stalwart’s future, including their participation in the ODI World Cup 2027.

Speaking in an interview with News18, Gambhir when questioned about Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s participation in 2027 ODI World Cup, said, “We still have a T20 World Cup before that, and that is again a huge tournament, which is going to happen in India in February-March. So, the entire focus at the moment—after England—will be on the T20 World Cup. And November-December 2027 is still two-and-a-half years away.”

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both have opened up on their participation in the 2027 World Cup. "Right now, I am taking things as they come. It wouldn’t be fair for me to think too far ahead. At this moment, my focus is on playing well and maintaining the right mindset. I don’t want to draw any lines and say whether I will or won’t play in the 2027 World Cup. There’s no point in making such statements right now,” Rohit Sharma had said after guiding India to Champions Trophy win in Dubai.
Furthermore, star India cricketer, Virat Kohli was also questioned about his future at an event. When the anchor asked Virat Kohli, “Any hints about the next big step”, the 36-year-old quickly replied, “Maybe, try to win the next World Cup.”
