Indian football legend and icon Sunil Chhetri has called time on his International career as the veteran footballer is all set to feature in his last game against Kuwait in the World Cup Qualifiers second round on June 6. On Thursday, as he announced his retirement through a social media post, his friend and Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli poured his wishes to the 39-year-old through a heartwarming comment.
Chhetri, who has played 150 matches for the Indian team, has been a goal-scoring machine throughout, netting 94 goals in his career. Among the active cricketers, only Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal and Lionel Messi of Argentina are placed higher than him. His first goal in Indian colors came in 2002.
On Thursday, he posted a long heartwarming video where he announced his retirement from International football and reminisced about his fond memories for the Men in Blue since his debut. Congratulating on his post, former Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli posted a comment which read, “My brother. Proud.”
Both athletes represent Bengaluru-based franchises and clubs in their respective Indian sports leagues and share a strong camaraderie.
