On Monday, May 12, star India batter and former India captain, Virat Kohli announced retirement from Test cricket, putting down curtains to his illustrious 14-year-long career. Although, his decision came as a shock to many, it just came in a span of six days after Rohit Sharma had called quits from Test cricket. Although, Kohli and Rohit’s decision would be final, former Australia cricketer Michael Clarke feels that Kohli might come out of retirement.
The former Aussie captain feels that if India go down against the English side by a massive margin, the 36-year-old might make a u-turn and return to Test cricket. It is to be noted that India is set to face England in a five-match Test series, the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy, starting from June 20.
I think he’ll come back if India lose the series 5-0: Michael Clarke
Speaking on his podcast, Beyond23 Cricket, Clarke said, “If India go to England and get flogged—say they lose the series 5-0—I think the fans will want Virat Kohli to come out of retirement. And honestly, if he’s asked by the captain, selectors, and is supported by fans, I think he’ll come back. He still loves Test cricket.”
The 44-year-old also added that Indian team would miss both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as he said, “Rohit Sharma retires from Test cricket. Tactically, he was a brilliant captain. Virat Kohli walks away - devastating. Test cricket will miss him.”
It is to be noted that Kohli retired from Test cricket last month, ending his stint in the whites after playing 123 Test and scoring 9230 runs. His last outing in the India whites was also a forgettable one, where he scored only 190 runs in five Tests at the BGT 2024-25.
