The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are currently on a search for the position of Chief Selector for the men’s cricket team post Chetan Sharma’s exit. The BCCI has been working with an Interim Chief Selector with Shiv Sunder Das in the role ever since Sharma lost his job following a sting operation in February, wherein, he was seen talking about confidential information related to Indian team and players. Recently, there were rumours that former India great Virender Sehwag has also been approached for the position. The former player has reportedly broken his silence ending all the speculations regarding the same.
Ex-India opener was asked by The Times of India whether he has been approached for the position of the Chief Selector, to which Sehwag said, "No". Hence, with a simple and straightforward answer Sehwag debunked all the rumours that were in the air of him being India’s next Chief Selector. According to a report by the PTI, a BCCI source had said that Sehwag was approached for the same, but the pay scale offered is not lucrative enough to attract such big names from Indian cricket.
According to the source, "During CoA's time, Viru was asked to apply for head coach's job and then it went to Anil Kumble. It is unlikely he will apply himself and also the pay package isn't something that will be financially viable for someone of his stature. But if we talk about stature, only he makes the cut from North Zone."
"When Dilip bhai was chairman, he had to make a choice between S Badrinath and Virat Kohli. He saw a few India A games in Australia, and he knew whom to back. Rest is history. He could stand his ground in front of Greg Chappell before that,” said the source, opening up on the importance of having prominent players as the Chief Selector.
