Real Madrid faced Mallorca on 14th May 2025 at the Santiago Bernabeu in match day 36 of La Liga. Having lost to FC Barcelona in the previous match week, Madrid now had a very slim chance of winning LaLiga and only a win could keep their title hopes alive. However, Madrid was facing a major selection crisis as they were forced to call up multiple academy players due to injuries to 12 first-team players. They suffered another set back in the 11th minute itself when Mallorca centre-back Martin Valjent scored the opener with a well-placed shot into the left-bottom corner beyond Thibaut Courtois.
However, Los Blancos showed grit and perseverance in the second half and fought hard to come-back with Kylian Mbappe scoring the equalizer in the 68th minute. After receiving a pass from Modric in the six-yard box, Mbappe showcased his trademark quick feet and cheekily slotted the ball past the Mallorca goalie Leo Roman, who had been brilliant through the entire match. The winning moment came late in the dying minutes during injury-time when 20-year-old academy graduate Jacobo Ramon pounced on a loose cross into the penalty box and scored the winner for Real Madrid.
Kylian Mbappe creates history by becoming Real Madrid player with most goals in debut season
The goal from Kylian Mbappe to instigate the comeback for Los Blancos was an historic one as it took the Frenchmen’s goal tally in his debut season with Real Madrid to 40. With this, Mbappe became the player with the greatest number of goals scored in a debut season at Madrid. Mbappe also boosted his LaLiga tally to 28, which is three goals clear of second placed Robert Lewandowski.
Real Madrid’s win has merely postponed Barcelona title charge as a win tonight against Espanyol in the local Catalan derby would see them win their 28th league title. Hansi Flick’s team has already secured two titles this season with some dominating performances throughout and will look to add another one to the bag tonight against Espanyol.
